FIFTEEN

The water bashing the back door was worse. Both Carrie and Melba pressed on the door. It would open an inch and then a burst slapped it back. People were moving towards the lake. Was that their intention? Or was the water dragging them there? It took three tries before they got the door open.

“What’s wrong?” Carrie asked Bert Carson as he sloshed past her.

“The fish. The fish in Moon Lake have gone crazy.”

“What? How does a fish go crazy?”

“Come see for yourself.”

Together she and Melba were propelled the two blocks to the lake. The space next to the buildings under the awnings offered the most protection. At least then Carrie felt in control of her feet. At crosswalks not so much. Water flew out of Moon Lake like a crazy person flapping a fire-hose.

“It was a site she’d never forget. All different types of fish jumped out of Moon Lake. Some thirty feet high. Some jumped one after the other forming huge fish arches shimmering against the sun that had recently reappeared. Water spouts sprayed the crowd and the town.”

“Are they happy or mad?” The little girl next to Carrie asked her.

“I don’t know. What do you think?”

“I touched the water. It is hot. I think they are trying to stay cool.”

That didn’t make sense. How could the water be hot? “Honey, you said the water is hot?” In December, she added silently.

“Yes, looky I burned my hand.” She stuck her hand out to Carrie.

Red spots continued to form on the girl’s arm.

“Doc. Boone” she called across the beach. “Come here.” He took one look at the girl’s arm and yelled for Sacks. The three of them disappeared.

Carrie walked to the water and touched it with the tip of her finger. It was cool on the surface. She pushed her finger in farther. “Ouch.” The sand below was scorching. Like it was on fire.

“Money to burn”

“Money to burn.”

“Burnt money, burns.”

The hecklers ranted as they passed by.

“I don’t know about you, but I’ve about had it with them and their chants,” Red said as he came up to Carrie and Melba. “Sacks needs to run them out of town on a rail. And he needs to do it now.”

“There is another team of three of them in town. Saw them this morning.” Wilfred joined the discussion. “Rumor has it Zac heard one of them say they’d come into town to exact revenge for The Strange Guy and Carrie’s ex. Hate to tell you this Carrie, but rumor has it your ex was their leader. He backed the MoneyMadders dude.”

Unless everything she knew about Clive was a lie, it just didn’t fit. “I just cannot believe he would do such a thing. He likes money too much. You saw that expensive suit and watch he was wearing. Can’t believe he would back these guys.”

“People change.”

“Not Clive. Not like that. If he was backing someone who was all for money, that I would believe. But not against spending money. It just doesn’t fit.
